You can create a growing line animation in PowerPoint by drawing a line shape on your slide and then applying a Wipe animation to it, which makes the line appear to grow from one end to the other. This technique works in PowerPoint 2016, 2019, Microsoft 365, and even older versions like 2013. The key is choosing the correct direction for the Wipe effect — for a horizontal line, set the direction to From Left or From Right; for a vertical line, choose From Top or From Bottom. This creates a clean, professional growing effect without any special plugins or add-ins.
Before applying the animation, it is important to draw your line carefully using the Insert > Shapes menu and selecting the straight line tool. Hold the Shift key while drawing to constrain the line to a perfectly horizontal or vertical angle. Once drawn, you can adjust the line’s weight (thickness), color, and style using the Shape Format tab. Thicker lines — typically 3 to 6 points — produce a more dramatic and visible growing effect, especially in presentations viewed on a large screen or projector. Very thin lines (1 point) can make the animation feel subtle to the point of being invisible from a distance.
A common mistake is using the Appear or Fade animation instead of Wipe. Appear simply pops the full line into view instantly, and Fade reveals the entire line at once with no directional growth effect. Only the Wipe animation — found under the Entrance category in the Animation pane — truly simulates a line growing across the slide. You can further control the feel of the animation by adjusting the Duration field in the Timing group; a duration of 0.75 to 1.5 seconds generally feels smooth and intentional, while anything above 2 seconds can feel sluggish depending on your pacing.
- Open the Insert tab, click Shapes, choose the straight line, and hold Shift while dragging to draw a perfectly horizontal or vertical line on your slide.
- With the line selected, navigate to the Animations tab and click Add Animation, then scroll to the Entrance section and select Wipe from the animation gallery.
- Click Effect Options immediately after selecting Wipe to set the direction — choose From Left for a horizontal line growing left to right, which is the most natural reading direction for most audiences.
- Open the Animation Pane (found in the Advanced Animation group) to view timing controls and set the Duration to approximately 1 second for a clean, professional-looking reveal speed.
- To animate multiple lines in sequence — for example, building a timeline or chart — use the Start: After Previous setting on each subsequent line so they grow one after another automatically.
- If you need the line to appear to grow from its center outward, draw two separate half-lines meeting at a center point and animate each with Wipe in opposite directions, triggered simultaneously using Start: With Previous.
- Test your animation in Slide Show mode (press F5 or Shift+F5 for current slide) to verify the direction, speed, and trigger timing look correct before presenting to an audience.
Once your growing line animation is working correctly, consider pairing it with other animated shapes or text boxes to build more complex diagrams or timelines step by step. For example, animating a series of growing lines alongside callout labels works extremely well for roadmap slides or process flows. Keep in mind that this specific Wipe technique works best for straight lines — if you need to animate a curved or freeform path, you will need to explore the Draw Custom Path motion path tool instead, which is a different and more advanced approach entirely.
