How do you create a rounded triangle shape in PowerPoint?

Creating a triangle with rounded corners in PowerPoint is not as straightforward as clicking a single shape button, because the built-in triangle shape does not include a drag handle to round its corners the way rectangles do. However, there are two reliable methods that work in PowerPoint 2016, 2019, and Microsoft 365: using the Edit Points feature to manually curve the corner anchor points, or combining the triangle shape with the Merge Shapes tool alongside a carefully placed circle. Both approaches give you full control over how rounded the corners appear and keep the result fully editable as a vector shape.

The most accessible method for most users is the Edit Points approach. After inserting a standard triangle from the Shapes panel (found under Insert โ†’ Shapes โ†’ Basic Shapes), right-click the shape and choose Edit Points. Each corner of the triangle becomes a visible black square anchor point. When you right-click one of those anchor points, a context menu appears with options including Smooth Point or Corner Point. Selecting Smooth Point on each corner releases two white circular handles called Bรฉzier handles. By dragging these handles inward toward the center of the triangle, you pull each sharp corner into a gentle curve. The longer you drag the handles, the more pronounced the rounding effect becomes. Repeat this for all three corners to achieve a symmetrical result.

A common mistake is pulling the Bรฉzier handles too far, which causes the sides of the triangle to bow inward and create an unintended star-like or pinched silhouette rather than a clean rounded triangle. A good rule of thumb is to keep each handle drag to no more than about 15โ€“20% of the total side length for subtle rounding, or up to 35% for a more pill-like corner effect. If you want perfectly symmetrical rounding on all three corners, zoom in to at least 150% view and use the Ruler and Gridlines (View tab) as alignment guides. Another approach worth knowing is to start with an Isosceles Triangle shape if you want an equilateral-looking result, since it gives you equal left and right sides by default and reduces asymmetry when editing points.

  • Insert a standard triangle via Insert โ†’ Shapes โ†’ Basic Shapes, then hold Shift while drawing to constrain it to equal proportions, ensuring balanced rounding on all three corners.
  • Right-click the shape border and select Edit Points to enter point-editing mode, where each corner anchor becomes individually adjustable with Bรฉzier curve handles.
  • Right-click each corner anchor point individually and choose Smooth Point to unlock the two white Bรฉzier handles that control the curvature direction and depth at that corner.
  • Drag each white Bรฉzier handle toward the interior of the triangle, keeping the drag distance consistent across all three corners so the rounded effect appears uniform and balanced.
  • Use the Format Shape panel (right-click โ†’ Format Shape) after editing points to apply a solid fill color, which makes it much easier to visually judge whether the curves look even and intentional.
  • If precise symmetry is critical, duplicate the edited shape, flip it horizontally, and overlay both copies to visually verify that the left and right curves mirror each other correctly.
  • To reuse the shape across slides, right-click the finished rounded triangle and choose Save as Picture (SVG format if available in Microsoft 365) so it can be re-imported without losing its smooth edges.

Once you have a rounded triangle you are happy with, group it with any text boxes or icons placed over it so the entire element moves and scales as a single unit. Keep in mind that the Edit Points method produces a slightly different result each time unless you record exact Bรฉzier handle positions, so for brand-critical work, creating the shape once and reusing it as a saved asset is a smarter workflow. This technique does not work well for producing very tight, geometric right-angle rounding โ€” for that specific case, the Merge Shapes approach using overlapping circles at each vertex produces cleaner, more mathematically precise results.
