In PowerPoint, you can apply multiple animations to a single object or to different objects so they play at the same time by using the Animation Pane and changing each animation’s start trigger to “With Previous” or “After Previous.” By default, every new animation you add is set to start “On Click,” which means they run one at a time with manual triggers. Switching the timing to “With Previous” makes an animation begin at the exact same moment as the one listed directly above it in the Animation Pane, effectively creating a synchronized, simultaneous effect without any extra clicks during the slideshow.
Understanding the three start-trigger options is essential before you attempt to layer animations. “On Click” pauses the slideshow until the presenter clicks or presses a key. “With Previous” fires the animation in sync with the preceding animation, making it ideal for combining a fade and a motion path on the same object. “After Previous” waits for the preceding animation to fully finish before starting, which is useful for sequencing effects that should appear back-to-back automatically. A common mistake is adding a second animation via the main Animations tab ribbon without first opening the Animation Pane — doing so can accidentally replace your first animation rather than adding a second one alongside it.
To add a second or third animation to the same object without replacing the first, you must use the “Add Animation” button found in the Advanced Animation group on the Animations tab (available in PowerPoint 2013 and all later versions, including Microsoft 365). Clicking any other animation thumbnail in the gallery will overwrite your existing animation. For example, you could give a text box both a Fly In entrance (set to “On Click”) and a Pulse emphasis effect (set to “With Previous”) so the text flies in and pulses at the exact same moment. In PowerPoint 365, you can even stack a motion path on top of both, creating a three-animation combination that runs simultaneously on a single element.
- Open the Animation Pane by clicking Animations → Animation Pane so you can see the full stack of animations and their timing relationships at a glance.
- Select the object you want to animate, apply your first animation from the gallery, then use “Add Animation” — never click a gallery thumbnail directly — to layer a second effect without losing the first one.
- Change the second animation’s start to “With Previous” in the Animation Pane dropdown so both effects fire simultaneously the moment the first one is triggered, requiring only one click from the presenter.
- Use the Delay field (in tenths of a second) to offset simultaneous animations slightly — for example, set the second animation to 0.3 seconds delay so it begins just after the first starts, creating a staggered-yet-automatic cascade effect.
- To animate multiple different objects simultaneously, select all of them at once with Shift-click, then apply one animation; all selected objects will share the same animation entry and trigger by default.
- Use “Reorder Animation” arrows at the bottom of the Animation Pane to rearrange the sequence so your “With Previous” animations align correctly with their intended trigger partner.
- Preview your combined animations frequently with the Play From button in the Animation Pane to catch timing conflicts before the actual presentation, especially when mixing entrance and motion-path effects on the same slide.
The key practical takeaway is to treat the Animation Pane as your primary workspace whenever you are combining effects — the ribbon gallery alone is not sufficient for this task. A clear next step is to open a test slide, add a shape, apply a Fade entrance, then use Add Animation to layer a Grow/Shrink emphasis set to “With Previous,” and watch both play simultaneously when you click once. Keep in mind that this approach can become confusing for audiences if overused; simultaneous animations work best when they serve a clear visual purpose, such as animating a chart and its label together, rather than for decorative complexity.
