Dress appropriately for the occasion

You don’t want to overdress and risk coming across as arrogant or out of touch with your audience nor do you want to underdress and appear unprofessional. The key is to find a balance that is appropriate for the event and the audience you’ll be presenting to.

For a business presentation, a suit and tie or business casual attire are generally a safe bet. Avoid wearing anything too flashy or distracting, such as bold patterns or bright colors.  For a more casual presentation, such as a workshop or seminar, you may be able to get away with a more relaxed look, such as a collared shirt or blouse and slacks.

Pay attention to grooming and hygiene

Taking the time to ensure that your hair is clean and styled, your skin is clear and moisturized, and your makeup—if you wear any—is fresh can go a long way in presenting a polished appearance.

Additionally, be sure to check for any grooming faux pas, such as visible sweat or bad breath. These can be distracting for your audience and detract from your message. If you’re prone to sweating, consider wearing an undershirt or bringing a backup shirt to change into.

Consider body language and posture

Your body language can communicate a lot to your audience about your confidence, professionalism, and engagement.

To project confidence, make eye contact with your audience and stand up straight. Avoid crossing your arms or fidgeting, as these can make you appear closed off or nervous. Instead, use open gestures and facial expressions to convey your message.

In terms of posture, try to maintain an upright position throughout the presentation. Slouching or leaning on a lectern can make you appear disengaged or uninterested in your topic. Instead, use the space around you to move and gesture, while maintaining an upright and engaged posture.
